Last week I mentioned the website www.autismshines.com, which includes pictures and bio’s of children, teens and adults on the autism spectrum.
There is also a beautiful book called “Autism Heroes: Portraits of Families Meeting the Challenge” by Barbara Firestone. It is divided into sections, “Dignity”, “Hope”, “Opportunity” and “Love”. There are stories of families with children diagnosed with high-functioning autism and others that have children diagnosed on the more severe end of the spectrum. All the families celebrate their children equally.
Autism just doesn’t affect an individual, it affects their entire family. Life can be, in turns, beautiful and fulfilling, challenging and difficult. But life is life, and when autism is part of that equation, autism is your life.
You can go to their website and order it https://www.autismheroes.org/. It is also available at most booksellers.
